A5 Folding-Wing Amphibian Monoplane Small amphibian planes have always generated a buzz of interest in the aviation world, and one that is designed to be flown by a newbie pilot is definitely worth checking out. ICON recently came out with their A5, a folding-wing amphibian monoplane. The first prototype is finally completed, and the company is said to be going into production of their second model in Tehachapi, California. About the ICON A5 Designed to be easy to fly, the A5 has an innovative flapless wing along with a spin resistant frame. It also comes equipped with an AOA (Angle of Attack) instrument that prevents stalling of these flying machines. These amphibious planes weighs approximately 686 kg and can seat two people. It also has an optional retractable landing gear as well as a carbon composite waterproof hull. The ICON A5 Unveiled at EAA AirVenture The first model of the plane was unveiled at EAA AirVenture in Oshkosh. The first flight took place in July, and the company stated that this flight was one of the three that would be given for FAA approval. Once that is done, the company will soon start to roll these planes out into the market. It has been estimated that each of these planes will cost around $189,000. Production Rate of 500 a Year ICON is very proud of its new plane and claim that they will be able to produce about 500, A5 amphibious monoplane a year. But as of right now, the first 100, A5 plane are all ready to go and set to be auctioned off. A part of the auction proceeds will be given to Veterans Airlift Command that provides free transportation to the survivors of 9/11 and their families. Kirk Hawkins, the CEO and Founder of ICON, believes that the A5 is the biggest achievement of the company so far.
