I believe I can touch the sky,
Think about it every night and day,
Spread my wings and fly away…
For anyone who is passionate about flying, this has got to be an anthem of sorts. I know I find myself replaying the words in my mind every so often when I am gazing up into the sky.
You’ve got to admit, there is something irresistible about the very thought of flying. It evokes vivid images of a freedom unfettered from everything, including gravity. It’s just you and the vastness of space all around you. I often wonder if every soul on this planet has this same deep desire to be able to soar like a bird up in the sky. Perhaps we’ve always felt a twinge of envy as we watch them. History shows that from the beginning of time, humans have expressed a relentless desire to soar upwards into the sky and touch the clouds. Go back in time and there are several people who did not just stop at wishing they could fly. They strapped on their wings and gave it a go! And when they failed the first time and several times after that, they just tweaked the design of their wings and tried again.
Have you ever laid down and stared at the clouds and wondered what lay beyond? Very often, at low point in our lives, we cannot help but yearn to fly away so we can escape that helpless feeling and reach out towards a feeling of hope and relief that we know are somewhere out there beyond the clouds. It’s a wonderful feeling that is a mix of hope, freedom and bliss and interestingly, it’s only the thought of flying that can create this vivid imagery for us. You’re hardly likely to feel the same way while walking on solid ground. It is the thought of that floating feeling with a loss of balance that helps you acquire that feeling of inner peace within us. When gazing out of an airplane window, I often wonder whether we all think alike and wished we could walk on the clouds.
Having said that I guess that what we wish for in life really depends on where we grew up. If you grew up close to the sea, it’s only natural to want to sail a ship across the vast ocean or go fishing, If you grew up in the outback maybe you’d want to drive four wheel drives and catch the biggest hunt and if you lived in the city you would grow up wanting to be the cool cat of your street. When it comes to flying however, it does not matter where you spent your childhood or where you live now, the desire to fly traverses all environments and surroundings. Even if you haven’t thought about it for a while, all it takes is for a plane to fly overhead and you’ll find yourself gazing up into the sky with some sense of relaxation as your mind wanders into another dimension. Perhaps you wish you were on that plane going to an unknown, destination far away from your humdrum everyday life and towards an exciting adventure.
Different people may have different thoughts but the fact remains that watching a plane fly overhead can trigger the mind in so fascinating and memorable ways. What do You Think?
